On Saturday October 12th we were able to enjoy the Volante KartCup. This year it was held on the kart track in Lelystad and unlike other years in the autumn.
Fortunately, the weather gods were kind to us and it was dry and reasonable in temperature. The drivers were not cold, many got out of the kart heated.
After registration and lunch it was time for the briefing, in which the rules of the game were clearly explained. First 20 minutes of qualifying, then a 2-hour race in which at least 5 changes had to be made, one of which also required refuelling.
Spurred on by a motocross race on one side of the circuit, a Stockcar race with roaring V8s on the other side and the air traffic of Lelystad airport above us, the qualification started, in which all team members drove a number of laps in order to achieve the fastest lap time.
As usual, the first laps were not the fastest, but as the qualification progressed sharp lap times emerged. This resulted in a top 3 of Viro Engineering in 1st place, Team Gazelle1 in 2nd place and the Nozems in 3rd place. The lap times determined the starting grid.
Shortly after the qualification, the karts were put in their starting position and the starting signal was given. Now it was all about driving as many laps as possible: fast lap times are nice, but consistency is even more important. All teams neatly adhered to the mandatory number of stops and the minimum duration of them (25 seconds) so that no penalties or disqualifications followed. After a great race, team “De Nozems” was the first to be flagged off, with an impressive 161 laps. Team “Turbostars” followed after more than 26 seconds and another 6 seconds later team “RVS Racing” crossed the finish line.
The team with the fastest lap was “Viro Engineering”, with a fastest time of 42.090 seconds. There was also a consolation prize for the last team “The Hart Liners”, who had taken a bit more time to explore the circuit with 145 laps.
The award ceremony followed quickly and there was a long talk afterwards. It was once again a lively event.
We would like to sincerely thank the organization and everyone involved, but of course also the teams for their sportsmanship and enthusiasm. We are already looking forward to next year’s Kart Cup, where we hope to welcome everyone again.
